The CarbFix carbon mineralization project at ON Power‘s Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant is one of five outstanding geothermal projects shortlisted by the European Geothermal Energy Council for the Ruggero Bertani European Geothermal Innovation Award 2020.

A Council release states that the award is given to companies which have made an outstanding contribution towards the field of geothermal energy in the form of innovative products, scientific research or project initiatives. CarbFix actually falls into all of these categories, but the method is an industrial solution based on extensive scientific research to tackle climate change. It involves that otherwise emitted carbon dioxide is mixed with water and injected into a basaltic bedrock formations where the greenhouse gas mineralizes in a natural process. Reykjavík Energy has now established a special subsidiary for promoting the method world-wide.

Among other shortlisted projects involve extracting lithium from geothermal fluids, innovation in drilling technology, and a plan for the capture of geothermal energy to produce steady and dependable heat and electrical power without emissions of any kind.

The prize will be presented in early March 2020.
