Safety tips
What to keep in mind when using hot water
Water that is used to heat houses in Iceland is usually very hot - Water temperature commonly reaches 80-90°C (176-194°F).
Hot water for bathing and washing dishes comes from the same supply - It is vital to show special care in the use of water. NEVER let hot water get into contact with your skin without first checking its temperature. Most accidents occur around baths, showers, sinks and mopping buckets filled with hot water.
Let the water run from the tap for a while to make it reach maximum temperature - Hot water cools down when it does not run in pipes; therefore it does not reach target temperature for the first 2-4 minutes after a tap is opened.
Never fill a bath tab or Jacuzzi without constantly monitoring its temperature - A bath full of hot water is an accident hazard! Avoid filling a bath with hot water first, then intending to cool it down with cold water. You should blend the hot and cold water when you start filling the bath.
What to keep in mind when using electricity
Carelessness with electronic equipment is a fire hazard - Old reserve fuses can still be found in old houses. Make sure that you have a stock of old fuses on hand: 10 Ampere for lighting, 16 – 26 Ampere for larger appliances and 35 Ampere for branches.
Old electric wires are commonly operated under heavier load than designed for - Have a professional check the condition of wiring and make the necessary improvements, if need be. Safely switch off all electric appliances before leaving home.
Poor and frayed extension cords may cause accidents - They can be particularly dangerous to children. Therefore you should beware of excessively using extension cords. Make sure that they are not subjected to harsh treatment and keep them out of children’s reach.
The main fuse (circuit breaker) pops down when devices and wiring are faulty - Try to locate the malfunction by first switching off all branch fuses and then unplugging all devices. Then switch on the main circuit breaker, branch fuses one after another, and finally re-plug each electric device. Call an electrician if a repair is needed.
