Edda Sif Pind Aradóttir defends PhD thesis
7.10.2011
Friday 7th of October at 15:00, Edda Sif Pind Aradóttir will defend her PhD thesis ”Reactive transport models of CO2-water-basalt interaction and applications to CO2 mineral sequestration” in Askja at the University of Iceland Edda's PhD thesis is a part of the CarbFix Project.
Opponents are Dr. Andrew Felmy, Laboratory fellow at Pacific Nortwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Washington, USA, and Dr. Dennis K. Bird, professor at Stanford University, California, USA. Professor Hannes Jónsson was Edda‘s supervisor in the Ph.D. project, and Ph.D. advisors were Dr. Eric L. Sonnenthal, scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and Grímur Björnsson, scientist at Reykjavík Geothermal. Professor Guðmundur G. Haraldsson, Head of the Faculty of Physical sciences, will conduct the ceremony, which takes place in room 132 in Askja and starts at 15:00.
Edda was born in Denmark but raised in Iceland. She finished her BS degree in chemical engineering in 2004 and an MS degree in chemistry in 2006 at the University of Iceland. Since 2006, she has been working on her Ph.D. project with prof. Hannes Jónsson and in collaboration with Reykjavík Energy. A part of the project work was performed in Berkeley in collaboration with Dr. Eric L. Sonnenthal, scientist at LBNL. The project was funded by Reykjavík Energy, GEORG Geothermal Research Group and the University fund of Eimskipafélag Íslands.
The project involves development of multidimensional reactive transport models of CO2-water-basalt interaction and predictive simulations of the possible sequestration of CO2 in carbon rich minerals after pumping carbonate solution into basalt formations, especially in the vicinity of Hellisheidi geothermal power plant.
