PhD Position Within the CarbFix Group at the University of Iceland
8.4.2010
PhD student position available in the spring of 2010 at the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland. This project will be a part of the CarbFix and the GEORG projects.
The overall objective of the CarbFix project is to develop an industrial solution for mineral sequestration of CO2 in basalt, and to train young scientists to carry this knowledge into the future. The project consists of field injection of CO2 charged waters at the Hellisheidi power plant, SW Iceland, laboratory experiments, computer modelling of fluid flow and gas-water-rock interactions, tracer tests, natural analogue - and cost analysis.
The PhD position will be funded by GEORG/RANNÍS and CarbFix. This particular student project will focus on CO2 charged pressurized seawater-basalt experiments to find out whether seawater can be deployed for mineral sequestration of CO2 from geothermal activities. The relatively high water demand limits the general application of the mineral sequestration method where water supply is limited. The student will also be trained in monitoring borehole CO2-charged waters at the Hellisheidi site.
The requirement for the position is an MSc degree in geochemistry, good geochemical background and, ideally some experience in sampling well fluids. Applications and further enquiries should be sent to Domenik Wolff-Boenisch, including official grades from MS and BSc studies and the names, phone numbers, and addresses of two potential referees.
Deadline for application is May, 9th 2010.
