International Conference on Carbon Capture and Storage at Reykjavik Energy‘s Geothermal Power Plant

26.8.2009

September 7-8 an international conference on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) will be staged in Iceland, at the site of the CarbFix project, which attempts to geologically store CO2 in as a crystalised mineral in the Icelandic lavas. Among those lecturing at the conference are world-leading authorities on CCS and global warming and the focus of the conference will be on CO2 sequestration processes.

Registration for the conference is already closed.

The University of Iceland organizes the event in cooperation with Orkuveita Reykjavíkur (Reykjavik Energy), The Earth Institute at Columbia University and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Toulouse, France. These parties are now undertaking an experiment in the Hengill geothermal area, Iceland, where sequestration of CO2 mixed with water will take place.

By capturing CO2 from variable sources and injecting it into suitable deep rock formations, the carbon released is returned back where it was extracted instead of freeing it to the atmosphere. This technology might help to mitigate climate change as injecting CO2 at carefully selected geological sites with large potential storage capacity can be a long lasting and environmentally benign storage solution. The CO2 at Hellisheidi Iceland will be stored as solid calcium carbonate mineral in basaltic rock.
