International Conference on CO2 sequestration Processes Reykjavik ICELAND 5-12 September 2009

15.5.2009 An international conference on CO2 sequestration processes run in partnership by the CarbFix network in Reykjavik, Iceland, Reykjavik Energy, the Earth Institute at Columbia University, New York, Institute of Earth Sciences of University of Iceland and the CNRS in Toulouse, France will be held in Reykjavik in September 2009.

A portion of this meeting will feature an experiment to determine the feasibility of CO2 disposal in basalt involving university scientists from Iceland, Toulouse, and New York. The term disposal, rather than storage, is used because the idea is that the CO2 will be neutralized by dissolution of the basalt. In September 2009, after three years of preparatory work, injection of CO2 dissolved in water at 25 bars will commence. This experiment is sponsored by Reykjavik Energy and involves CO2 separated from the steam which feeds their Hellisheidi geothermal power plant.

The goal of this conference is to bring together people involved in pilot sequestration experiments ongoing or planned elsewhere on the planet. The hope is that it will constitute the beginning of a dialog among the world's key sequestration experts.

The conference will be broken into three parts:

1) An optional field sampling excursion

2) A scientific program with presentations by world renowned speakers
3) An optional field trip to significant geothermal sites
