Nesjavellir - Vörðu-Skeggi

Distance 7,7 km (From Nesjavellir)


A steep trail that requires endurance.

Starting at Nesjavellir (Action Park), the trail follows a 4 km ridge towards the roots of Hengill, ascending towards Vörðu-Skeggi. A magnificent view of Þingvellir and Nesjavellir gradually opens up. In information post splits the trail above Kýrdalir, one leading to Dyradalur (trail 12) and the one we follow to Vörðu-Skeggi (Trail C).

Trail A - Vörðu-Skeggi

Difficulty level = 3
Distance = 0,3 km


From the information post (Trails B,C and D - see below), this trail leads to Vörðu-Skeggi.  A great view in all directions to Þingvellir National Park, Langjökull glacier, Mt. Hekla, Vestmann Islands, Mt. Vífilfell, Reykjavík, Snæfellsjökull glacier, Mt. Esja, etc.

Trail B

Difficulty level = 3
Distance = 1,5 km


From the information post, the trail leads up a steep pass through a beautiful, narrow valley. The view to Innstidalur and Hellisheiði is incredible. Through a steep, snow-covered slope, the trail leads through a narrow pass between high cliffs and to an information post that splits the trail, one leading to Nesjavellir (trail 13) and Innstidalur (trail 11) and the other to Vörðu-Skeggi (trail A)

Trail C

Difficulty level = 3
Distance = 1,3 km


From the information post above Kýrdalir, the trail leads through a narrow path, with towering cliffs above and a deep canyon below. The view to Þingvellir and Nesjavellir opens up as we ascend. The trail leads through a valley and over a ridge to an information post that splits the trail, one leading down to Innstidalur (trail 11) and the one we follow to Vörðu-Skeggi (trail D).

Trail D

Difficulty level = 3
Distance = 0,4 km

Heading north from the information post, over tundra and snowbanks towards Vörðu-Skeggi.  The trail splits at an information post, one leading to Sleggjubeinsdalur and Marardalur (trail B), the other one we follow to Vörðuskeggi (trail A).
