Hydrogen

The use of hydrogen as fuel transportation is gaining momentum in Iceland. Orkuveita Reykjavíkur is a shareholder in VistOrka, a hydrogen developer established in 1999. The world´s first hydrogen refueling station (located in Reykjavík on the site of a conventional gas station) opened in 2003. Three hydrogen buses operated in the Reykjavík public transport system between 2003 and 2006. The goal was to gather information on the technological performance of hydrogen-powered buses and Iceland´s hydrogen infrastructure, as well as conduct research on the socio-economic and environmental implications of the use of hydrogen as an energy source. VistOrka continues support for research and demonstration; DaimlerChrysler has delivered one fuel cell vehicle to customers Iceland. By mid 2009, roughly 30 hydrogen powered vehicles will be on the streets.
